Happo-One / ◎340cm / Partly Sunny2022.Jan.27

22012701_happoI started out the day skiing amidst fog. Light snow was falling on the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), where visibility was poor, but snow conditions were good with the tightly-packed groomed, wet snow surface topped off with 1 to 2cm of fresh snow. I broke through the clouds around the “Usuba Slope” area at the end of the run.

22012702_happo After returning on the Riesen Quad, and climbing back up and riding the Alpen Quad, I noticed a window of bright, clear sky forming above me just as I was about to get off the lift, so I decided to go ahead and make my way all the way up to the top of the resort. Stepping off the Grat Quad, I found myself above the weather, starting out over the rough, yet beautiful sea of clouds (pictured). A moderately strong, cold wind was whipping the clouds around in dynamic fashion.

22012703_happoI overheard others in the area voicing their reaction to the impressive scene with comments such as, “Wow, I didn’t expect to emerge above the clouds.” and “Amazing!” Riesen Grat was in great condition from top to bottom, with the top portion featuring a firmly-groomed powder snow surface (2nd photo), and the end portion (pictured) being slightly softer.

22012704_happoDescending down to the Usagidaira Slope, I once again found myself enveloped in fog. The groomed portions of Usagidaira had a firm, wet snow surface covered with 1 to 2cm of fresh snow, while the snow surfaces of the north-facing Skyline Course (pictured) and area alongside the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad were composed of moderately-packed powder snow. Again, snow conditions themselves were great for skiing in each area, but the thick fog forced me to take a little extra care out on the slopes.
