With the snow at the foot of the mountain continuing to melt, the Nakiyama area’s Public Course is closed for the season as of today, which means that it is no longer possible to ski down all the way to the base of the resort. It is now necessary to ride the gondola or the Nakiyama No. 3 Triple back down to the bottom. Skies this morning were sunny, but hazy – due to the presence of Asian Dust in the atmosphere.

The groomed, granular snow surface of the Riesen Slalom Course was moderately soft. The further I descended, the softer and stickier the snow became, and by the Usuba Slope (pictured) it was enough to catch and noticeably slow my skis. From Usuba to the Happo Riesen Quad (※Open until 4/4) the skiable area of the course was narrow at times, but the snow was well maintained and navigable without issue.

It was enjoyable spring conditions on the groomed Usagidaira Slope. Conditions in the area of large bumps along the Alpen Quad were similar to those of Usuba. By the way an exclusive “BLASTRACK 2021-22 NEW MODELS TEST RIDE” event, based out of a specially set up tent on the Usagidaira Terrace, will take place from 4/2 (Fri.) to 4/4 (Sun.). (※Participation is free of charge but an ID is required.)

In other event news, the ‘Nakiyama Spring Poka Poka Market’ kicked off at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School with live music performances, food trucks and more. Owing to it’s north-facing location, the groomed snow in the area along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad hadn’t softened up nearly as quickly as Usagidaira or Riesen, and made for some extremely enjoyable runs.
