“We love your site,” was the greeting from two snowboarders. “We did one run on the Panorama Course before making our way up here. Now the plan is to ride Usagidaira~Kurobishi~Skyline. And hey, look at this view!” Incidentally the Grat Quad, scheduled to start at 9 a.m., got going at 8:30 today; a full 30 minutes early.

It was a clear, windless day and the slopes benefited from some mild overnight cooling. There were great, well-groomed powder snow conditions on the wide-open Panorama Course! My edges bit and held well, and I was able to execute solid turns on repeat.

At the Usagidaira Slope and along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad, the groomed powder snow surface was moderately soft. A man from the town of Ikeda in Nagano prefecture (pictured, 2nd from left) called out to me saying, “I always check your reports! I’m here with a group of skiing buddies that get together and ski Happo during the holiday weekend each February. The weather and snow are perfect!

Conditions on the Skyline Course (pictured) were similar to those of the Panorama Course. Heading towards the base of the mountain along the Kitaone Forest Cat Track~Sakka Wave~Shirakaba Slope, the conditions ranged from moderately packed wet snow higher up to areas mixed with large granular corn snow lower down.
