Due to the rapidly increasing number of novel coronavirus cases across the nation, Happo has decided to make some changes to its ski resort operation beginning on 1/18 (Mon.) In a nutshell, they have announced that they will be suspending some lifts and services and closing some courses, but the resort will continue to remain open while implementing thorough measures to prevent infections. The courses that will be closed are the Olympic Course I, the Kokusai Slope and the Race Training Area serviced by the Kitaone No. 3 lift (pictured from yesterday).

It was raining lightly at the foot of the mountain this morning, but I watched as the rain turned to snow as I progressed up the mountain on the gondola. At the Usagidaira Terrace there was no wind to speak of, and a slightly damp snow was falling steadily. A pair of skiers from Gifu prefecture greeted me with one saying, “We always use your site. We’re happy that it’s snowing here on the mountain. I have to head back home tomorrow, but my friend (picutred, right) is here skiing until the 26th (Tue.) of next week!”

About 10cm of fresh, powdery snowfall covered the moderately-packed groomed surface of the slope along the Kurobishi No. 2 Quad lift (pictured). The new snow was surprisingly lighter than I had expected, and feeling the fresh snow underfoot made for enjoyable turns. The 5 to 7cm of new snow further down the Skyline course did feel heavier than the snow higher up, but the conditions were still good enough for easy, enjoyable skiing.

Conditions at the groomed Usagidaira slope also were also comfortable, with 10cm of new snow atop the pisten-packed surface.
As the day progressed, the air temperature steadily dropped and by just after 9:00 a.m., the rain had turned to sleet at the Shirakaba slope.
However, the wet snow thinly covering the groomed surface was sticky enough to prevent smooth sliding.
