Temperatures have risen very quickly since we entered the month of March, but thanks to the abundant snowfalls that continued throughout the season and lasted until the end of February, the resort managed to reach its last day of business for 2021-22 with plenty of snow remaining. I ran into a local skier from Otari Village (pictured), who said, “I love your reports. Unfortunately, it’s raining today, but since it’s the last day of the season I decided to come out.” In addition to the rain, fog blanketed the mid to upper portions of the resort until around 9:00.

The ungroomed Highway Course (1st photo), was marked by shallow, uneven tracks and bumps made of soft, wet snow. The groomed Wakaguri Chuo Slope (pictured) featured slushy, granular snow conditions. There I ran into a member of Hakuba Village’s ski team (pictured), who told me, “Today’s the last day for Hakunori, so tomorrow I’ll be heading over to Hakuba47 to train.”

I spoke with a woman from Tokyo who was learning how to Telemark ski (pictured, right). She told me, “I do winter mountaineering. In the future I’d love to be able to descend on Telemark skis, so today is the first time for me to receive lessons. It’s really tough!” The snow surface of the groomed Wakaguri Rinkan Course (pictured) was also spring slush made of granular snow.

I had a chat with a member of the Ski Patrol (pictured), who told me, “Thanks for coming out in the rain. We had so much snow this year, but it looks like we’ll finish the season with no avalanches and no accidents. We’ll work hard to make the resort even better next season.” A big thanks for visiting Hakuba Norikura this season, and for taking the time to read our reports!
