We’re now only 28 short days away from the conclusion of Hakunori’s winter season at the end of March. Before that, the Alps No. 8 Pair (pictured, background / No. 7 Pair pictured foreground), No. 9 Pair & No. 10 Pair lifts will close on 3/21 (Mon., holiday), with the Spring Vacation Campaign kicking off on 3/22 (Tue.). During the campaign, 1-day tickets drop to JPY3,000 for adults and JPY1,500 for elementary school students.

It was another day with pleasant temperatures and warm sun. I spoke briefly with a couple of snowboarders from Hakuba (pictured), who commented, “Nice weather today. The Highway Course was pretty hardpacked first thing this morning.” I found the top half of the groomed Highway Course to have a firm, wet-snow surface, while the bottom half as well as the Kamoshika Course were characterized by hard, uneven surfaces.

The sun-exposed Rabbit Course (pictured) had a moderately-firm, groomed granular-snow surface, that was turning somewhat slushy by 10:30. From here a mogul course sits to skier’s left, while a slalom course set up by the local racing team occupies the area to skier’s right. (※Open to the general public.)

The well-packed, wet-snow surface of the steep Sky View Slope (pictured) had begun to soften, creating ideal conditions for intermediate riders to tackle this advanced course. The weather began to change around 10:30, with the weak westerly winds shifting to stronger northwesterly winds, and dry snow beginning to fall lightly.
