The early morning sun was shining through a sky full of clouds, and a weak northwesterly wind blew across the slopes.I got into a conversation with a snowboarder (pictured) who told me, “I love your site.” He continued, “I left my house at 4:00 a.m. this morning and am here for just today. It’s been consistently warm for a while and it looks like it’ll continue, so I’m worried about the snow melting quickly.”Warm temperatures are obviously a big factor, but warm winds are one of the other major contributors to the end-of-season snowmelt.

The granular snow surfaces of the groomed Rabbit (pictured) and Wakaguri Chuo courses were moderately soft from the outset.Despite the gradually shrinking base, there was complete snow coverage and no areas of exposed brush or ground, and I enjoyed a few speedy runs on the wide-open course.Currently, because of preparatory efforts for the National Disabled Snowboard Championship and Supporter’s Cup Tournament to be held on 3/14 (Sun.), the area along the No. 5 High Speed Pair is restricted.

The morning safety check took longer than usual today, delaying the start of the No. 3 High Speed Pair lift until 9:15 a.m.I ran into a group of three skiers from Nagoya who told me, “We always check your reports. The wind has picked up and it’s even started to snow. Today the wind is chilly so the slopes aren’t loosening up so fast and conditions are still good.”

Not long after that the winds grew even stronger and light snow began falling.Conditions on the top half of the Highway Course and Kamoshika Course (pictured) were similar to Rabbit and Wakaguri Chuo, with moderately soft, groomed granular snow surfaces. The ungroomed second half of the Highway Course was peppered with the hardened tracks leftover from the previous day.
