At the LES ALPES gift shop (pictured), located inside the slopeside Hakuba Alps Hotel, the most popular gifts are: 1. Raicho no Sato, 2. Shirakaba no Daichi, 3. Nagano Sanka. Also on sale is an original bath salt called Onsen no Moto, which is formulated with the same mineral composition as the hotel’s natural hot spring waters.

The Wasabi Shiitake (pictured, 200g JPY 1,100), which is always displayed near the entrance of the shop, is also highly recommended. It contains no artificial dyes or preservatives, smells and tastes great and goes well with rice or as a side dish to accompany sake.

Just as the forecast predicted, it was raining in the morning and a light southerly wind was blowing across the Highway Course.Despite the weather, the groomed surface was holding up well and my skis glided smoothly across the loosened corn snow. The Kamoshika, Wakaguri Central and Wakaguri Rinkan courses featured similarly good conditions as well.

A couple of snowboarders practicing turns near the Snow Drop informed me, “We just arrived on a bus tour this morning. We’ll be staying the next 2 nights at the Hakuba Alps Hotel. It’s my second time at Hakunori and her first time.”Unfortunately, because of the rain, only a handful of customers could be seen on each course.
