Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny2022.Jun.25
The recent heat has sped up the snow melt at high elevation, and now the major areas within the Nature Park that still have lingering snow are relegated to a 200 meter section before and after fuketsu, two roughly 100 meter patches between the Kusugawa river and Ukishima Shitsugen, and a single 100 meter area stretch from the Ukishima Shitsugen to Yase-one. I overheard people commenting about the snow, saying things like, “It’s been a while since I’ve seen snow.” and “I can’t believe how much snow is still visible!” as they took care not to slip while walking along the path.

There were Shirane-aoi (pictured) and Shinano-kinbai blooming in the Ukishima Shitsugen area, as well as plenty of Iwakagami and Sankayo beginning to flower between the Ukishima Shitsugen and Tenbo Shitsugen. Hiking was comfortable thanks to the strong gusts of cool wind coming from the south.

I spoke with the first person to arrive at the Tenbo Shitsugen’s observation deck at the far end of the Nature Park, a man from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “I always use your site. The weather turned out pretty good, didn’t it? I’m staying tonight at the Tsugaike Hyutte. The wind is a bit strong though, and it’s almost cold sitting down here.” Not long after, a number of other people arriving to the deck likewise commented on how cold it was.

I noticed a lot of visitors with DSLR cameras walking around and taking photographs of the peak blooms of Mizubasho inside the Mizubasho Shitsugen. In addition to the Mizubasho, the overall greenery has increased along with the number of Ryukinka in bloom, and the whole area is beautiful and worth seeing. In other news, this seems to be a year for abundant Oshirabiso (purple pine cones), which are visible in large numbers from the ropeway.
