Tsugaike Nature Park / Cloudy2022.Jun.21

The mizubasho, or Asian skunk cabbage, blooming inside the Mizubasho Shitsugen area of the Nature Park are now at around 70% of peak, and the visitor center staff expects for the peak to occur around 6/25 (Sat.). Despite temperatures being relatively low at around 14℃, the high humidity meant that I felt just right wearing only a single long-sleeve shirt this morning.

Elsewhere in the park, mizubasho (pictured) could also be seen blooming at the northern end of the Watasuge Shitsugen and in the area just before the Kusugawa river. The large deep holes in the snow that had revealed only small sections of bare ground when the park opened for the season are now entirely gone, replaced by thickening green foliage. The route that traces the western edge of the Watasuge Shitsugen (the route on the Northern Alps side) opened today, and with that all routes within the Nature Park are now walkable.

The Mizubasho Shitsugen is the area of the park where the largest numbers of mizubasho are blooming, and they are particularly concentrated along the western side of the boardwalk that encircles the marsh (pictured). And although they were few in number, there were nice yellow splashes of ryukinka to be found as well. Furthermore, the alpine cherry trees known as takane-zakura, were just beginning to bloom at the southern end of the Mizubasho Shitugen and around the stairs leading down to the Kusugawa river

The snowmelt is proceeding quickly, and snow now covers less than 30% of the Nature Park. The walking routes that still have snow are those between the Mizubasho Shitsugen and Watasuge Shitsugen (before and after fuketsu), the area between the Kusugawa river and Ukishima Shitsugen, a section between the Ukishima Shitsugen and Yase-one, and the route between Ginmei-sui and the Tenbo Shitsugen. Because of this, we recommend wearing waterproof/water-resistant sneakers or trekking shoes when visiting.
