Tsugaike Nature Park Visitor Center was shrouded in the fog in the early morning but I could see the blue sky. I went to Hakuba Oike for the first time this season, hoping that I can go above the clouds. Visibility became clear after walking about 15 minutes and the sun was coming out at Tenguppara (as shown in the photo).

I went to the eastern slope of Mt. Hakuba Norikura, walking along the boardwalk at Tenguppara and crossing the stream winding among the rocks. “We’ve been staying here at Hakuba Oike since yesterday as we have shooting for “Marmot”, an outdoor goods company. The remaining snow was easy to walk on even without crampons!”, three ladies coming from Tokyo said (as shown in the photo).

I finally went above the clouds but the clouds soon came up. I used my tiptoes to avoid slipping as the surface of the remaining snow was loose and crunchy. Nobody was using crampons as there was rocky area.

I could see the blue sky when I was on the top of Mt. Hakuba Norikura around 11 a.m., but it got cloudy again in 30 minutes. I found Miyama Daikonso, Mitsuba Oren and Hakusan Syakunage in bloom under creeping pine.

There was still snow on the steep slope on the northeast side of Hakuba Oike. If I had lost my footing, I would have slid down the snowy slope and have gone straight into the pond. “Oh my gosh!” “This is so scary”, people walking along the narrow path said one after another.
