Nozawa Onsen / ◎315cm / Snowy2022.Jan.27
Large flakes of snow were falling this morning, and a fluffy layer of around 3cm of fresh snow covered the firm, pressed-powder surface of the Uenotaira Slope. The Snow Park located near the middle of the Uenotaira Slope opened today at 10:30. The park currently features 12 basic items, including a 4m mini box, a 4m mini rainbow, a 6m rainbow box and more.

Conditions on the Paradise Slope were the same as those on Uenotaira. I spoke with 2 snowboarders from Nagano’s Saku city, who told me, “Most of the time we board at Yunomaru, but always make it a point to come out to Nozawa Onsen at least once. The snow here is amazing!”

Over on the Schneider Course, the groomed wet snow surface at the top of the run was moderately firm, but got progressively harder as I continued descending along the run. The surface of the Challenge Course (pictured) was also on the hard side. The amount of new snow topping each of the slopes and courses I visited seemed very consistent across differing elevations, and the light, fluffy quality of the snow felt fantastic.

I would have to describe the surface of the Utopia B Course as hard as well. I ran into a patch of rough, crunching granular snow around the steepest portion of the slope near the middle of the run. I noticed skiers carefully setting their edges as they made their way down the hard, ungroomed snow on the Utopia A Course. The top of the resort was blanketed at times in fog, but not enough to significantly affect visibility.
