Hakuba Iwatake / ◎220cm / Partly Cloudy2021.Feb.19
Clear, cold skies overnight saw temperatures plunge chillingly low early this morning, with a digital sign along road 148 displaying -12℃ on the way to Iwatake. However, by the time the resort opened, the calm, sunny weather quickly warmed things up and made for a pleasant day to be outside. As the Iwatake Back Bowl opened up at 9 a.m., a rush of customers looking to catch first tracks in fresh powder could be seen dropping into VIEW A (pictured) and VIEW B one after another.

At VIEW A (pictured) there was between 15 to 20cm of fresh, fluffy snow on top of a soft, flat base. The rare halfpipe-like natural terrain makes for a fun, unique feeling that’s hard to find elsewhere.Skiers and boarders amped up by the excellent conditions could be heard hollering their approval through clouds of powder.

Next I headed from the soft, groomed powder of the South slope to the inviting open face of Hill Top (pictured). There too I found around 15cm of light and dry new snow covering a soft surface and enjoyed some amazing powder turns. Not long after a number of deep tracks could be seen cutting across the ungroomed SONEZAWA and DANGAN courses.
[Hill Top]
It was comfortable cruising conditions on the Sawa course, with its firmly-packed, groomed powder snow surface.Over in the Hikage area, there was still plenty of undisturbed fresh snow even around 9:30 a.m.Ultimately I made my way back to the base via Gezan → Sunny Valley → Paradise (pictured) experiencing the same excellent conditions all the way down the mountain.
