Iwatake had been operating under scaled back conditions since 1/26 (Tue.) due to thge confirmation of coronavirus infection in an employee that necessitated PCR tests on other staff members, but as of 1/30 (Sat.), the resort was able to return to full operation. Starting with the gondola, a total of six lifts were running and the Iwatake DC Park (pictured) was open as well! It was a nice day, with sunlight faintly penetrating through the clouds.

Skiing conditions on the groomed South Slope were good, with a thin layer of fresh snow covering the tightly packed granular snow surface. At the Iwatake DC Park, all of the items were excellently built and maintained, and the crowds were sparse so it was easy to give them a try. However, the landing area for the 9m kicker (pictured) was on the hard side.

The wide box towards the start was especially popular. The narrow down box (pictured) is considerably more difficult, so it was impressive to watch advanced riders making it look easy. Because of the park’s move from the North Slope last season to the South Slope this season, there is more room and better spacing between the items.

I chatted with two visitors from Tochigi Prefecture who said they always check our resort reports. One of them said, “When I was a student I was living in Hakuba at lodge at the base of the mountains. Even now when I come back they still take good care of me. I’ll be here for a while, and next week I’m planning on splitting time between Iwatake and Goryu.”
Snow conditions on the East Slope felt a little more powdery, while conditions on the Sunny Valley Course and Paradise Slope were almost identical to those of the South Slope.
