Hakuba Iwatake / ◎190cm / Snow/Rain2021.Jan.23

Yesterday’s warm temperatures continued into today. The groomed surface of the East Slope (pictured), where snowmobiles carved the day’s first tracks at 8:15 a.m., was covered in fine granules of moderately packed snow. Starting out, I could hear the edges of my skis scraping against the crusty top layer, but they got enough bite to enable me to execute my turns.

The surface of the South Slope seemed to be even stiffer than that of the East. Of a more immediate concern, the light snow / sleet falling on the mid to upper portions of the resort was accompanied by a thick layer of fog that greatly reduced visibility. “I can’t see,” called out a voice from the void, followed by, “Which way leads back to the base?” (* Heading towards the red pole on the left edge of the photo takes you to the Gezan Course.)

Heading down the mountain, the surface layer of fine snow covering the groomed slopes began to loosen, and by the bottom half of the Sunny Valley Course (pictured) both visibility and snow conditions had improved ? making for easier skiing. This was true for the Paradise Slope as well, despite the light rain.

Iwatake’s Sky Arc restaurant changed directions in the summer of 2020, focusing its offerings around Nagano-grown fresh vegetables served under the name “HAKUBA DELI”. (*Winter hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) The quality and amount of food served with the limited quantity “Hakuba Deli Standard” meal (pictured) is what you would expect from a classy hotel lunch. (1,480 yen, excluding tax) The main dish of today’s set was lasagna.
