Otari Soba (pictured, 1,300 yen) comes highly recommended as a local gift by the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba’s 1st floor gift shop staff. The buckwheat flour used is produced entirely in the village of Otari. Also, Omachi Hokuan Brewery’s Amazake (sweet sake) can be picked up on sale from the rack near the entrance, discounted to 980 yen from the usual 1,200 yen.

The rain falling at the foot of the mountains turned to flakes of fine snow higher up, falling from the middle all the way up to the top of the Hiedayama Rinkan Course. Between 2 to 4 cm of fresh, wet snow laid atop the loose, granular groomed surface from the start to the middle of the run. On the Ikenotaira and Ipponmatsu Courses, my skis slid easily over the loosely packed damp snow.

I ran into a group of students who arrived yesterday, telling me, “We’re staying 2 nights at Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba as a graduation trip. It’s everyone’s first time here, with the exception of the skier (pictured, left).” Incidentally, Cortina will be offering a First Tracks Experience promotion on the Ikenotaira Slope on 3/14 (Sun.), with participants capped at 10 and limited to those staying at the hotel.

A mother from Nagano prefecture’s Saku city (pictured) took advantage of the ongoing “Nagano & Neighboring Prefecture Half Price Lift Ticket Campaign” to come out to Cortina. She said she had been here before, but that it had been about 10 years ago. With rain falling at the base area, she and her child were the only two people playing in the Kids Park. The wet, groomed snow was great for sledding.
