Cortina / ○290cm / Snowy2021.Feb.03

Despite the calendar declaring today as the first day of spring, snow was falling this morning due to the pattern of atmospheric pressure and cold air that is typical of winter. The large, well-groomed granular snow on the Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) was covered in roughly 8cm of new snow. The conditions allowed for smooth, comfortable turns, with each one sending up a spray of snow.

The top of the resort had up to 20cm of fresh snowfall. It wasn’t a massive dump, but it was enough to bring out the powder hounds, who could be seen lining up for the No. 4 Pair Lift.In particular, I noticed a lot of people heading to the ungroomed Hiedayama Courses 2 and 3 off the lift.Cheers went up from observers on the lift whenever someone was spotted in the tree run area (pictured) just off the No. 4 Pair.

The ungroomed Itadaira Course also got a nice reset thanks to the fresh accumulation, with fantastic-looking fields of untouched snow spreading out across the slope. However, you had to be careful of bottoming out on the somewhat hard, clumpy base hidden below the soft powder surface in some areas. This didn’t seem to be a problem for the advanced riders who were effortlessly carving their way down.
Conditions on the Hiedayama Rinkan Course were good with well-packed powder perfect for skiing.

Snow on the Ikenota Slope was comparatively less dry than higher up, but still well-groomed and covered in between 7 to 10cm of new snow.

Around 9:30 a.m. the blue sky began to break through the clouds in the east and sunlight stretched across the slopes with increased intensity. The fresh snow that felt light and fluffy in the early morning began to melt and loosen up due to the warm sun, and began to feel heavy underfoot.
