Open category, which is a main event in the competition, was held today, on the second day of “JAPAN FREERIDE OPEN 2019“. I saw Mr. Gota Miura (a man wearing the orange ski wear on the right side in the photo), who attempted to climb the highest peak in South America, Aconcagua, with his father Mr. Yuichiro Miura, among participants at the starting area.

The competition started at 9:45 a.m., 15 minutes later than scheduled. The area beside No.6 Pair Station was great to watch the middle and goal area and to enjoy the competition. People were sending cheer to skiers/snowboarders although the visibility was unclear because of the fog and the snow blown by the strong northerly wind.

There were 88 participants in total, including 47 skiers and 41 snowboarders. Ms. Ayana Onozuka, who was the bronze medalist in the women’s freestyle skiing halfpipe at the Sochi Olympics, also joined (as shown in the photo). Tree Area on the southern side of Mt. Hiedy 3, which was the main course in the competition, was in a difficult condition with both over 70 cm of fresh snowdrifts and icy parts existing.

“Hi, Snownavi! We’ve started our activities recently. Please introduce our projects!”, members of “Protect Our Winters Japan“, who were running a booth at No.6 Pair Station said. The organization spreads information on climate change and conducts activities to protect our winter from climate change.
