Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden / Partly Cloudy2022.Oct.14
It’s been a rare stretch of more than 10 days of disappointing fall weather, continuing since the weekend of 10/1 (Sat.) & 10/2 (Sun.). The conditions have caused the progress of the autumn leaves to be delayed by around a week, and today the fall colors inside the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden were at their best in the middle to upper areas alongside the Goryu Telecabine (2nd photo) at an elevation of around 1,500m.

Many hikers and mountain climbers could be seen first thing this morning around the base station of the Goryu Telecabine with their large backpacks. However, the Alps Tenbo Pair Lift (Alps 1st Pair Lift) already closed for the green season on 10/10 (Sun.). Currently only the Goryu Telecabine (pictured) is in operation, and will continue until 10/23 (Sun.), the last day of Hakuba Goryu’s summer season.

It was a chilly overcast morning, but as the sun began to shine the temperature quickly rose, and by the time I reached Mikaeri-zaka, I was beginning to sweat noticeably. I cooled down once again however around 9:30, as clouds rose up from the valley and began to dot the sky once more. The beautifully colored Kaeda (maples, pictured) in the area around Jizo no Numa caused many visitors to stop and capture the scene with their smartphones and cameras.

Today the views of autumn leaves looking in the direction of Hakuba47 and the Hakuba Sanzan (three major Hakuba Peaks) from the Jizo Cairn were incredibly beautiful. The colorful foliage around Line-E (pictured), illuminated in the soft morning light, combined with Goryu’s high perch above the valley made for some especially superb scenery. Looking towards the Toomi ridge, the once-colorful fall leaves had mostly faded, but I enjoyed the view of imposing Mt. Goryu silhouetted against the perfect blue sky.
