It took 20 minutes of waiting before the first tracks were laid down on the Tsuga-no-mori Slope, where fog was rolling in and out. I talked with a skier from Nagano’s Matsukawa Village (pictured), who said they loved our site, and commented, “It’s pretty empty today now that the 3-day weekend is over.” It did seem that things were off to a pretty slow start.
[Gotemba Course]
The groomed Gotemba Course (1st photo) had a moderately soft, powder snow surface. The groomed, powder snow surfaces of Tsuga-no-Mori and Han-no-ki (pictured) were slightly firmer, and I enjoyed pushing the pace. A group of 4 skiers from Kansai greeted me saying they always check our reports, and that they’ll be here skiing for the entire week.
[Han-no-ki]
I noticed some pretty skilled skiers and boarders lapping the Han-no-ki No. 3 Quad during the morning. I spent some time talking to another group of 4, this time from Fukuoka Prefecture and Hakuba. A lady from Fukuoka (pictured, far right) told me she came via shinkansen and bus, and was here on a 2-day, 1-night skiing trip.
[Han-no-ki]
Around 9:00, a wet snow began to lightly fall. Snow conditions on the wide-open, slopes at the top of the Kane-no-naru-oka area (pictured) were good, with the powder snow surface pressed firm by the grooming machines. Snow on the lower half was wet, but overall I found conditions were good for smooth skiing.
