Hakuba Iwatake / ◎180cm / Partly Cloudy2021.Mar.04
It was a calm, sunny day with thin, wispy clouds spread across the eastern sky.The first skier of the day on the East Slope (pictured), from the Kyoto area, told me, “I love your site. Last night I stayed at the Hakuba Tokyu Hotel. The emergency declaration was lifted and I was finally able to come out for some skiing.”
[East]
On the first half of the immaculately groomed South Slope (pictured here) and East Slope (pictured above) conditions were a firm mix of packed powder and pressed granular snow.Overall, snow along the groomed portion of the bottom half of the South Slope was generally of a granular quality. Another skier in the area called out to me, “I always check your site. The groomers are pretty firm this morning, I like that.”

The weather only got better as the day progressed, and eventually the sun could be seen shining on Hakuba’s three major peaks; the Shirouma Sanzan (pictured). The groomed snow on the VIEW C and VIEW D courses was also a mixed bag of packed powder and granular snow.Off to the sides where the snow was ungroomed, around 15cm of the still-soft snow that had fallen up until yesterday remained atop the hard underlying base.

Over on the Gezan, Sunny Valley (pictured) and Paradise courses the snow surface was that of frozen granular snow.Although there were a few icy patches here and there, overall conditions were good. The ground was exposed in places on the steep face at the top of the Paradise Slope.
