Sales of a new sake produced by Omachi’s Hakuba Nishiki brand, brewed by Usui Shoten and called “Hakuba Happo Kurobishi” (pictured) began on Jan. 16 (Sat.). It is an unfiltered, raw “origarami” sake characterized by the fresh, rich and subtle undertones from the rice used to create it. It can be found at various shops throughout Hakuba, including Seven Eleven, Mount, Kajikura and A-Coop. A 700ml bottle retails for JPY1,870, while 300ml bottles can be had for JPY935.

Fine flakes of snow were falling at the top of the resort. Conditions on the expansive groomed slope at the outset of the Riesen Slalom Course were great, with perfectly packed powder snow! Further down the surface of the slope hardened up a bit, but even still I was able to execute turns without any issues.

Similar packed-powder conditions could be found on the Panorama Course along with 2cm of fresh surface snow. Early in the morning there seemed to be quit a few skiers heading down the skier’s left hand side of the Kokusai No. 3 Pair lift, while the snow to skier’s right (pictured) remained relatively untracked. By 9:30 a.m., intermittent rays of sunshine began to break through the clouds.

I made the acquaintance of a skier from Ise city in Mie prefecture (pictured). In talking to him, he said, “I always check your site!” Yesterday I drove for more than 6 hours non-stop to get to Hakuba. I plan on being in town until the end of the month.” From the end of the Riesen course through to the Shirkaba slope the groomed snow less dry and noticeably stiffer than the upper portion of the resort – with my skis making a distinctive scratching sound as they scraped the hardened surface.
