The FIS COWDAY SLOPE, a slopestyle snowboard tournament with some of the toughest competition across all of Japan, is currently taking place from 3/28 (Mon.) 〜 3/30 (Wed.) on Route 4. This year mark’s the 8th edition of the annual tournament, and today the 39 men and 11 women battled it out in qualifying. Each rider took two runs, with the best score being used to determine if they secured a spot in the finals.

A special, competition-specific course was built within the advanced lane of 47PARKS for the occasion. Going from top to bottom, the course is broken down into 6 sections, and features: a 4.5m rail, a vertical rail (pictured), a double down rail & 8m double down rail, 16m kicker, 12m table top, a rainbow rail & cannon rail.

As the official practice period began, I watched as the athletes put down extremely impressive runs. The jumps off of the overwhelmingly huge 16m kicker (pictured) and the 12m table top were spectacular. Scoring is based on the FIS judging system and is assessed based on five factors: execution, difficulty, height, variety and novelty.

Only 10 men and 6 women will qualify for the finals, which are to be held tomorrow 3/30 (Wed.). The winners for both men and women will take home the top prize of ¥300,000, while the runners up will receive ¥200,000 and third place ¥100,000! And, there is no cost to watch the competition. The practice runs for the finals begin tomorrow at 9:00, with the finals themselves starting at 10:00!
