The owners of Hotel Kunugi Hakuba (pictured) were on the slopes this morning. Besides kindly letting us know that they often check our site, they said, “We didn’t have any customers staying with us yesterday or today, so this is the first time we’ve been able to make it out on the slopes this early in the morning for the last 3 years.” Kunugi, located in Misorano, is a great option for those looking for a quiet getaway. I’ve had the opportunity to partake of Kunugi’s Asian-French fusion dinner course several times, and it was incredibly tasty!
[Cosmo River Course]
Due to this morning’s snowstorm, the operation of a number of lifts was suspended, including the Goryu Telecabine, Gonodola Line-8 and Line C.
Luckily, satisfyingly steep slopes can still be found on the bottom half of the mountain at Goryu & 47, particularly those of the Iimori zone.
There I was able to sniff out 30cm of ungoomed, fresh snow to skier’s left of the Straight Whiskey course (pictured).

The fluffy new snow was lightly packed by the wind, and there was enough of it to keep me from hitting bottom most of the time – but even when I did the surface below was soft; in other words, perfect powder conditions.
With such few skiers on the wide-open slope, I was able to lay down fresh tracks on repeat by doing laps using the Cosmo Four Lift.
[Straight Whiskey Course]
The soft groomed surfaces of the Straight Whiskey (skier’s right), Cosmo River, Powder Snow and Soft Cream courses were covered in between 10 to 15cm of fresh snow.
The feeling of cruising on such perfect powder conditions really had me buzzing.
And despite the ongoing storm, the clouds in the eastern sky were surprisingly sparse, and ever so often the sun was able to break through and cast a faint glow across the slopes. (Pictures 1 and 4)
