Tsugaike Nature Park / Partly Cloudy2021.Sep.21
Now that two of our reporters have gone up to the Tsugaike Nature Park over the last several days, we can officially confirm that the colors of the maple leaves (pictured) are beautiful this year! We’re definitely looking forward to the progression of fall foliage between now and the end of the month. The first plants to begin changing color, the red-leaved nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and okamenoki (scarlet leaved viburnum), are now at 60 to 70% of peak, while dakekanba (Erman’s birch) are between 50 to 60%.

The last 3 mornings have been clear, with the cool breeze carrying a distinct feeling of fall, while at the same time the shining sun felt hot. Around 9:30 a.m. the clouds rolling in from the west covered the tops of the Northern Alps, hiding the sun and dropping the temperature quickly. Looking out over the peaks of Mt. Korenge and Hakuba Norikura, it appeared as if the colors of the mountainside in the direction of Mt. Shirouma were continuing their transition to further shades of fall.

On this weekday morning after the 3-day weekend, it was a slow trickle of visitors to start the day. I talked briefly with a couple of ladies walking at a leisurely pace (the 2 women pictured in the foreground) who told me, “We are both traveling together, but we hit it off at the hotel last night and decided to come enjoy the fall leaves together today.”

The kurotsuribana (euonymus tricarpus) lining the route between the Mizubasho and Watasuge marshes (pictured) were producing berries. In fact, throughout the entire Nature Park many different varieties of berries could be seen, including those of the kuromamenoki, akamono, gozen tachibana and takeshima ran.
