Onbashira Festival
The Suwa Grand Shrine’s renowned once-every-seven-year Onbashira Festival has kicked off with the pillars beginning their way down the mountain (yamadashi), bound for the upper shrine (kamisha), as of 4/2 (Sat.). Unfortunately, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and for the first time in the festival’s 1,200 years of history, the pillars will be transported by vehicles instead of parishoners, and the famous log riding (kiotoshi) and river crossing (kawagoshi) events have been canceled. Preparations are underway for the erecting of the pillars (satobiki) to be held as usual.
