“Winter Night Festival” was held in Shinden area, Hakuba Iwatake, from 6 p.m. yesterday. Unfortunately, snow mixed with rain was falling at the foot. It was crowded with people, mainly overseas visitors as a free shuttle bus operated from Happo and Echoland.

Pork miso soup (pictured), sacred sake, pickles and coke cans were served from 6 p.m. Sweet red bean soup, called Oshiruko, was also served from 7:45 p.m. Hearty soup and sweet Oshiruko warmed all up and the site was filled with smiles. There were some food trucks in front of Shinden Public Hall, including broiled squid, hamburgers, buckwheat noodles, and oyaki (rice dumplings) trucks.

Rice cake pounding event was held twice. Everyone from children to adults enjoyed pounding. It seemed difficult for some people to handle a heavy pestle. Some overseas visitors were taking commemorative photos. Once Otari Daiko (drum) performance began, people started to dance to the beat of the drum.

People one after another joined in a “Tea Ceremony”. It’s not a formal one and held in a relaxed atmosphere. High school students were giving an explanation in English. Each participant was served with a cup of tea, taking hygiene aspects into account, although a master made tea in front of everyone.
