The light early morning snowfall fluttering in the weak north wind began to fall with more intensity around the start of business. The well-groomed surface of the Hiedayama Rinkan Course (pictured) managed to retain a slight powder feel to it.With a thick veil of fog reducing visibility I opted against the tree run area and instead stuck to the normal slopes.

The fog was so dense along the top to mid portion of the Hiedayama Course 1 that I was unable to discern the surface conditions. Finally, by the end of the run (pictured), visibility began to improve. At the top of the Itadaira Course, with similar whiteout conditions, I ran into a man who greeted me with the familiar refrain, “I love your site!” He went on to say, “At least the snow is freshly groomed today. It would be impossible to ski with visibility this poor on chopped up snow.”

Over on the Ipponmatsu Course and Ikenota Gelande, conditions were moderately soft and featured a mix of fine, rough granular snow and powder snow.A couple boarding together (pictured) told me they’d been staying at the Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba since yesterday.

With the low visibility blanketing the top of the resort, it seemed that few skiers and boarders were heading higher up, and instead most customers were concentrated around the Ikenota Gelande (pictured).I talked with a pair of ladies snowboarding as part of a bus tour (pictured, front). One told me, “We just arrived this morning and this is our first run. My friend (pictured, right) is a beginner so I’m doing my best to teach her.”
