Goryu & 47 / ◎430cm / Overcast2022.Feb.25

22022501_goryu47Overnight radiative cooling caused temperatures to drop near -10℃ early this morning, but with no wind, I was comfortable being outside once the resort opened. There was almost no new snow last night, and with the exception of some frozen areas in one or two shady spots, the road was dry and I found it easy to reach the resort. (※The walls of snow alongside the road are currently between 100 and 200cm tall. For reference, take a look at the minivan in the bottom right portion of the photo.)

22022502_goryu47It was powder-snow conditions on the well-packed surface of the groomed Toomi Slope. The smooth tracks laid down across the perfect corduroy snow first thing this morning painted a visual representation of the excellent conditions. In regards to the snow, the official snow depth being reported at the base of the mountain is currently 200cm, 50cm more than the same day last year.

22022503_goryu47The Grand Prix Course (pictured), Panorama Course, top of Route 8, Dynamic Course & Woody Course were well-groomed, with firm, even snow surfaces. My eyes caught sight of an advanced rider whose body was angled impressively close to the slope as they executed beautiful carving turns.

22022504_goryu47I found the surface conditions on the Powder Snow, Soft Cream and Sunny Way courses to be slightly softer than the groomers at the top of the mountain. Those conditions meant I was able to easily maintain my edges and ski comfortably at speed, making it feel as if I had suddenly gotten much better at skiing. The overcast skies blocked sunlight from directly warming the slopes and kept temperatures down, which helped maintain the fantastic conditions for a long time.
