Goryu & 47 / △50cm / Light Snow2021.Nov.25
Hakuba Goryu / Hakuba47 kicked off the 2021-22 winter season today, 11/25 (Thurs.), with the Telecabin gondola commencing operation at 12 noon, and the Alps 1st Chair Lift following suit at 12:15! This makes Goryu the 9th Japanese resort to open for the season and the first to do so relying entirely on 100% natural snow. In addition, neighboring Hakuba47’s Lift Line E is set to open the day after tomorrow, 11/27 (Sat.).

The final decision to open wasn’t made until this morning (in fact, it still hadn’t been decided when we set out to work on this resort report), and once it was announced most of the people rushing to ride their first lines of the season were locals. People who recognized I was with Snownavi made it a point to greet us with comments like, “It’s gonna be a good season!” and, “I always check your resort reports.”

Currently, only the Panorama Course is open (pictured, max 18° / average 15° / 850m in length), of which half of the slope to skier’s left had been groomed, and the half to skier’s right remained ungroomed. It was a slightly wet snow that at times felt a bit sticky underfoot, but also had that wonderful, soft, fresh natural snow feel!

I ran into THE DAY. HAKUBA’s Ito-san (pictured, far right), who exclaimed, “This snow is amazing right? It feels so good! This season’s new Hakuba Goryu 158cm snowboard model is perfect for these conditions.”
The 3 people with him, from Matsumoto and Azumino, added, “We love your reports. We thought the resort might open today so we got ready just in case. Our hunch was right on.”
