Madarao Kogen / ◎350cm / Drizzle2022.Mar.14

I ran into a snowboarder from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured) this morning, and in chatting was told, “I have to laugh at these whiteout conditions, I can’t see anything at all. I’m trying to head over to the No. 15 Lift in order to meet up with my friend at Tangram, but I’m a little worried if I can get there.” As a result of yesterday evening’s rains, the entire ski resort was blanketed in thick fog.

The snow surface of the groomed Champion Course (pictured) consisted of loose, granular snow. Despite the dirty-looking snow surface, my skis slid well and I found the course to be in good shape overall. However, the poor visibility did force me to slow down and ski with caution.

Conditions were similar to Champion on the bottom half of Giant (pictured). In other news, Ladies Day, which has been held weekly throughout the season, will draw to a close this week on 3/18 (Fri.). 3/22 (Tues.) marks the start of the discounted spring skiing season, with 1-day tickets for adults, junior high・high school students and seniors 55 and older dropping to ¥3,500, and prices lowered to ¥1,500 for elementary school students!

I spent time talking with a group of high school students from Chiba Prefecture’s Funabashi City, who mentioned that they had come to Madarao with Orion Tour. They also commented that they had great weather yesterday, but that not being able to see anything today was a bit scary. There were quite a few student groups on the Paradise, Beginner A, Beginner B (pictured) and Utopia courses, and I heard voices through the fog exclaiming more than once, “Ahhhh, I can’t see anything!”
