Goryu & 47 / ◎260cm / Partly Cloudy2021.Mar.19
The morning sun was shining on the ridgeline of the Northern Alps, but the slopes of 47 were still covered in shade. I spent a little time chatting with a couple from Toyama who mentioned that they often check our resort reports, and that they took advantage of the Nagano Neighboring Prefectural Resident Half Price Lift Ticket Campaign to come out and ski today. They also quipped, “We hope the slopes soften up a little bit more today.”

The sun finally reached the resort while I was riding up Line-E. Conditions on the Panorama Course (pictured) were great for speed, with its well-groomed snow surface. At the top of Route 1 (first photo above) the frozen granular snow was quite hard, and it was tough, though not impossible, to get and keep an edge.

I caught up with another couple, this time from Takayama in Gifu Prefecture, who told me, “We often come out to Iwatake, but this is our first time at Goryu / 47. The snow is still pretty decent at the resorts within Takayama, but is getting pretty thin at Okumino.” The groomed surfaces on Routes 8, 6 and 5 were all hard-packed and composed of the same type of granular snow.

An instructor for Hakuba47’s snowboard school called out to me saying, “I always use your site. The slopes are pretty hard today, aren’t they? Our school is open until the last day of the season on 5/5 (Wed.). Come out and board with us!” The lower portion of Route 1 was also hardpack, and I talked with four beginner-level students about how tough the conditions were for them.
