Spring in the valley means more days of stable weather and pleasant temperatures, so it’s a great time to grab lunch from the Mexican Soup Kitchen located in 47’s base area, and eat outside. One of their go-to offerings is their spicy Mexican Rice (pictured, 800 yen). It’s also possible to order any item on the menu for take-out, including tacos, nachos, soup and more.

It was a mild, cloudy morning with temperatures hovering above freezing from the start. Even with the warm March temperatures so far, snow cover in the Alps-Daira Zone is more than 100 cm above what it was at the same time last year, and it’s easy to see by taking a look at how much of the trees at the top of the resort (pictured) are still buried. The Panorama Course was in good groomed condition, with a firm, smooth granular snow surface.

The groomed portion of the Grand Prix Course (pictured) was composed of similar snow and also on the hard side. Yet, the surface loosened up noticeably with each successive run, and sliding conditions improved over time. Three members of the Kagayaking Snowboard Team, led by Mizuki Takeuchi, were on the slopes filming some video footage today.

In contrast to the copious amounts of snow still covering the top of the ski resort, the snow is noticeably thinning at the foot of the mountain, revealing more and more of the surrounding fields and rice paddies. However, thanks to the early, continuous use of artificial snow machines – both the Toomi and Iimori areas, as well as the bottom of Route 1 still maintain a snow depth of more than 100 cm. It goes without saying though that as you descend to the base of the resort the snow does continue to soften, but I found it to be easy and enjoyable spring-like conditions.
